Iceland was very photogenic, so consider yourself warned.

One of my favorite places in Romania is the village of Hoteni in Maramures county in the North of the country. The village is near the city of Sighet Marmatiei, which is near the Ukrainian border. Sighet (as the city is called) is home to several museums and is not so far from the Merry Cemetery. Highlights of our weekend off included a hike in the mountains and delicious homemade food – including fresh cheeses, cabbage rolls, bean soups, and wonderful homemade desserts. None of us wanted to leave!!
We have been in Zalau for five days, and Thursday was our first day with some sunshine – so I got out and about for some pictures.
It is a city of about 50,000 people, with a small but vibrant center and relatively sprawling suburbs that also contain, cows, horses and chickens and large vegetable gardens out in the hills just beyond the town. Not quite like the States, but the houses are particularly large . . .
more soon!
Just a few shots from my first day in Romania.
Cluj is quite lovely with its mixture of Romanian, Hungarian, and German roots. The architecture is amazing, with lots of detail ironwork, lovely terraces with lots of flowers, and plenty of public art. The food is delicious. So far, I’ve been able to sample a traditional Hungarian dish of egg noodles, farmer’s cheese, and bacon, a delicious thick but not quite creamy mushroom soup with lots of paprika, and the traditional polenta casserole layered with a salty, feta-like cheese and some sour cream on top. When will someone develop a “taste-a-vision” plugin for this blogging software, yeah???
