These cast concrete kitty guys were born from a copy of Poitier’s Cat we purchased to hang over our front door after having the front of our Philadelphia row home rebuilt. However, the hydrastone was not made for outdoors, so we made a rubber mold of the original and cast a concrete one for over the front door. But it seemed wrong to let the mold go to waste after just one cast – plus, we’d been somewhat inspired by the outdoor spaces when we visited Dali’s Pubol a few year’s back. This is what we’ve come up with so far . . .

One of my favorite places in Romania is the village of Hoteni in Maramures county in the North of the country. The village is near the city of Sighet Marmatiei, which is near the Ukrainian border. Sighet (as the city is called) is home to several museums and is not so far from the Merry Cemetery. Highlights of our weekend off included a hike in the mountains and delicious homemade food – including fresh cheeses, cabbage rolls, bean soups, and wonderful homemade desserts. None of us wanted to leave!!
We have been in Zalau for five days, and Thursday was our first day with some sunshine – so I got out and about for some pictures.
It is a city of about 50,000 people, with a small but vibrant center and relatively sprawling suburbs that also contain, cows, horses and chickens and large vegetable gardens out in the hills just beyond the town. Not quite like the States, but the houses are particularly large . . .

Just a few shots from my first day in Romania.
Cluj is quite lovely with its mixture of Romanian, Hungarian, and German roots. The architecture is amazing, with lots of detail ironwork, lovely terraces with lots of flowers, and plenty of public art. The food is delicious. So far, I’ve been able to sample a traditional Hungarian dish of egg noodles, farmer’s cheese, and bacon, a delicious thick but not quite creamy mushroom soup with lots of paprika, and the traditional polenta casserole layered with a salty, feta-like cheese and some sour cream on top. When will someone develop a “taste-a-vision” plugin for this blogging software, yeah???
Here’s a taste of what we saw during our week motoring about the Yucatan Peninsula in beautiful Mexico. Note that this taste cannot accurately reflect the actual taste of all the fresh guacamole we ate AT EVERY MEAL. Enjoy and thanks for looking!!
